An immigrant holds something of the magic of travelling swallows. In the 18th century there was a famous disagreement about these little birds, as to whether they sleep in river beds during winter, or, more explicitly, they would form a huge heap and dash together at the bottom of the river), OR they would fly all the way to the moon. Both these ideas are as inaccurate as they are amazing. Life as an immigrant is as complex, surreal and humbling as that. My name is Elena and I am a migrator, like the birds. I live in another country than my own, Italy, where I am lucky enough to experience both happy and sad events. Life here is colorful, racist and sexist plenty of times, but mostly beautiful and full of opportunities to learn how to be authentically wise and kind in the middle of adversity. I use my time to care for plants and teach children. They are very similar activities as some people might know. Children and plants will grow wonderfully on their own. The amazing job of the gardener is simply to guide them, nurture and believe in them in silence. I wish and pray that we can all be at peace with ourselves and the world around us. For this we need good teachers and willing parents. May we all slowly grow together, help each other and always truly believe in each other, ourselves and this world around us, to the best of our abilities!
